Join the Social Action/Justice Committee on Saturday, Feb 4, 10 am

as they present: HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) Shabbat,

with guest speaker, Chelsey Berlin.

HIAS is the world's oldest refugee agency.  Established in 1902 as the Hebrew 
Immigrant Aid Society, the organization was a continuum of earlier groups assisting Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe.  Originally set up by Jews to help other Jews, today HIAS is a multi-continent organization and advocacy group helping displaced persons around the world. What work does HIAS do?

* Resettle refugees * End gender based violence * Provide legal support
* Promote Economic Inclusion * Advocate for refugee rights *Respond to emergencies

Chelsey Berlin is the Director of Community Engagement and Initiatives at HIAS. Prior to joining HIAS, Chelsey was the director of B'Tselem USA, where she helped individuals, university students, and communities examine the status of human rights in the West Bank and Gaza and empowered them to take action. Chelsey also spent three years in the northern West Bank city of Nablus directing a service-learning program for young adults at Tomorrow's Youth Organization and a year in Tel Aviv studying Jewish prayer and political thought as the recipient of a Dorot Fellowship in Israel. She earned her BA in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from Brandeis University and currently lives in Washington, D.C.
