Shabbat Morning Services, with talk: Jewish Life in Australia
Saturday, December 10, 2022 • 16 Kislev 5783
10:00 AM - 1:00 PMShabbat services, including a talk by B'nai Tikvah member, Australian Vivienne Aarons, followed by Kiddush.
Vivienne is the B'nai Tikvah member who lives farthest away from Washington Street.
She participated in our recent congregational trip to Israel, and her stories of Jewish life and her experience living on a farm outside of Adelaide captivated us all. Vivienne and her stories are very special considering Australia has less than a 0.5% Jewish population. Those with her in Israel were impressed with Vivienne’s knowledge of Judaism and Israel and her love of life in the outback.
Vivienne will share some of her personal story with us and join us for the Kiddush in her honor. sponsored by Elaine Matisoff in collaboration with the Adult Education Committee. All are welcome to learn about this fascinating topic of life in rural Australia, firsthand from someone who lives there, who also is part of our B'nai Tikvah community.

In this six-week course, we will examine six women who lived in the time of the Talmud, whom the rabbis labeled as a shrew, a primadonna, a black widow, and so on. But was that all that they were? Was that all the rabbis thought of them? Or is there more to the story, hidden in the margins? Based on the acclaimed work of scholar GIla Fine, we will uncover the secret lives of these six remarkable women. -

What are we talking about when we talk about "Israel"? The name "Israel" in Jewish texts can have many meanings: the person, the nation, the land, and the modern state. In this six-session class, we will be examining different uses of the name "Israel" by looking at sources ranging from the Torah to modern thinkers. Together, we will gain deeper understanding into its meaning by looking at the connections between and teasing apart the differences among the range of meanings of the word, and be able to discern what we are talking about when we talk about Israel. -
