Special Guests
Each day (and night) of Sukkot, we invite different guests to join us in the Sukkah. Jewish mysticism takes this practice to a fascinating place: which of our ancestors and our heroes would we like to share a meal with? Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 6:50 p.m. This week, I will lead the service and share a teaching.
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, and Motzei. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning.
SHABBAT MORNING:
Broken, Mended, Whole
For Hol ha-Moed Sukkot, we reread Moses’s experience glimpsing God from the cleft of the rock (Ex. 33:12-34:26). What is Moses hoping to see in this moment? Does he get what he wants, or what he needs, and why do we read this portion on Sukkot?
Our Shabbat morning service begins at 10 a.m. in our Seresky Sanctuary, and you can join us in person or on Livestream. This week, Marvin Wolfert will read Torah, Marci Shaw will read Haftorah, and Dena Kaufman, Reb Nikki, and I will lead the service and offer a teaching. Services will conclude around noon and will be followed by a kiddush luncheon.
SHEMINI ATZERET AND YIZKOR
Join us for Erev Shemini Atzeret services on ZOOM at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, on the same link as the usual Mincha service. Then please join us Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in our Seresky Sanctuary for morning services, including Yizkor and a reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes. In the morning, Rob Yunich, Sam Evans, and I will read Torah, Heidi Wortzman will read Haftorah, Dena Kaufman and I will lead services, and I will offer a teaching. Services will conclude around 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by a kiddush luncheon.
SIMCHAS TORAH
Join us in celebrating the birthday of the Torah as we read the end of Deuteronomy and roll all the way back to the beginning to start the cycle anew. Our evening service will take place in our Seresky Sanctuary and on ZOOMbeginning Thursday night at 6 p.m., with dancing, song, and treats for the kids.
Then, on Friday morning, join us at 10 a.m. in our Seresky Sanctuary in person or on Livestream, as we celebrate the Torah and honor our Hattan Torah, Joe Doniger, and Kallah Bereishit, Debbie Gladstone. For both services, Linda Dietrich and Sam Evans will read Torah, Ellie Sirk will read Haftorah, and I will lead the service. Morning services will conclude around noon and will be followed by a kiddush luncheon.
